Of course my book has a setting. I would describe my setting (and characters) as whimsical, magical, and wintry mostly. Readers will tour cities and towns and the woodlands in between.
It also takes place during the 1990s, so how do I make it look like it? I have human teenagers say phrases like:
“Not.”
“Da bomb.”
“Whatever.”
“Take a chill pill.”
“Grunge (for the style of clothing).”
They wear colorful jackets and jeans folded up at the bottom. It was also an era where people listened to cassette tapes. Things familiar to our world make an appearance, such as McDonalds and Pizza Hut (though I describe them in ways where I don’t have to pay royalty fees).
Images of a fantastical world include foxes that make the Northern Lights, a Snow Queen figure, and robotic people covered in ice. Oh, and the finale takes place at Christmas, a holiday when wonder and magic typically happen.
Also, while dogs in real life can understand many human words, I have my dogs understand humans to the point where they themselves are almost humanized. Starlight, my main character, is a fox who learns to talk like a human as well (She learns slowly, but she’s getting there.).
Starlight is coming out December, so be on the lookout.
